How to install an eSIM on iPhone and Android
Installing a travel eSIM takes about five minutes. Do it at home on Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land.
Install an eSIM on iPhone
- Connect to Wi-Fi and open the QR code or installation link from your eSIM provider.
- Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan it, or tap the provider's installation link to install it directly.
- Give the new line a label such as "Travel" and keep your primary line for calls and messages.
- When you arrive, set Cellular Data to the travel line and turn on Data Roaming for that line only.
Install an eSIM on Android
Menu names differ by brand, but the steps are the same:
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code.
- Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Download a SIM instead, then scan the QR code.
- Other Android phones: look for "SIM manager", "Mobile network" or "Add eSIM" in Settings.
- On arrival, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on roaming for that eSIM.
Settings to check before you fly
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it cannot run up roaming charges.
- Keep your home SIM switched on if you need bank or login SMS codes while travelling.
- Save the provider's APN details and support contact somewhere offline.
- Do not delete the eSIM during your trip; most cannot be reinstalled.
Frequently asked questions
When should I install my travel eSIM?
Install it a day or two before you travel, while you are on reliable Wi-Fi. Many plans only start their validity when they first connect to a network in your destination, but check your provider's activation policy.
Can I use the same eSIM QR code twice?
Usually not. Most eSIM QR codes can be installed only once, so do not delete the eSIM from your phone until your plan has ended.
Will I still receive calls and SMS on my normal number?
Yes, if you keep your home SIM switched on. Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid roaming charges.
Why does my eSIM show no internet?
Check that the eSIM is selected for mobile data, that data roaming is turned on for the eSIM line, and that the APN matches the provider's instructions. Restarting the phone after landing often helps.
