Does my phone support eSIM?
Most phones released since 2019 support eSIM, but model, region and carrier locks all matter. Here is how to check in under a minute.
Three ways to check
- Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your phone has an eSIM chip.
- iPhone: open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data). If you see Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan, it is supported.
- Android: open Settings and search for "eSIM". An Add eSIM or Download a SIM option means it is supported.
Phones that usually support eSIM
- Apple: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer iPhone. iPhones sold in mainland China generally use two physical SIMs instead.
- Google: Pixel 3 and newer, with a few regional exceptions on older models.
- Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, plus the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series. Support can vary by country model.
- Others: many recent Motorola, Xiaomi, OPPO and other phones support eSIM, but often only specific models or regions.
The carrier-lock catch
Even an eSIM-capable phone can refuse a travel eSIM if it is locked to your carrier. If you bought your phone on a contract or plan, ask your carrier whether it is unlocked well before your trip.

Frequently asked questions
What is the quickest way to check if my phone supports eSIM?
Dial *#06#. If the screen shows an EID number, your phone has an eSIM chip. You can also look for an "Add eSIM" option in your mobile network settings.
My phone supports eSIM but the travel eSIM will not install. Why?
The most common reason is a carrier lock. A phone bought on contract may only accept SIMs from that carrier. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.
Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?
Yes, on most eSIM phones. You can keep your home SIM for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles mobile data.
