Travel eSIM on a non-PTA iPhone: does it work?

Yes, outside Pakistan a travel eSIM works on a non-PTA iPhone, as long as the iPhone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked. PTA registration only affects Pakistani networks. Abroad, your iPhone connects through the eSIM provider's partner networks, which do not check PTA status.

Check your iPhone first

1. eSIM support: iPhone XS, XR and every model since support eSIM. iPhones sold in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau often use two physical SIMs and have no eSIM.
2. Carrier lock: go to Settings → General → About and look at Carrier Lock. It must say No SIM restrictions. A locked iPhone (often sold as "JV") usually cannot add a travel eSIM.
3. EID number: in the same About screen, an EID means the iPhone has eSIM.

What works and what does not

Many non-PTA iPhones in Pakistan are US models from iPhone 14 onwards. They have no SIM tray at all, so they are ideal for a travel eSIM abroad.

Before you fly

• Buy the eSIM for your destination and install it at home on Wi-Fi. Do not delete it after installing.
• When you land, turn the eSIM line on and set it for mobile data, with data roaming on for that line.
• WhatsApp stays on your existing number. It does not depend on the SIM in the phone.
