Dubai SIM at the airport vs eSIM vs roaming
Landing in Dubai, you have three ways to get online: buy a tourist SIM at the airport, use a travel eSIM you installed at home, or roam on your home plan. The airport SIM gives you a UAE number but means a queue and passport registration; an eSIM has you online as soon as you land. Here is how they compare.
Option 1: Dubai tourist SIM card
UAE operators sell prepaid tourist SIMs at the airport and in shops across the city. You register with your passport and get a local UAE number.
- Good for: travellers who need a local number for local calls, bookings or deliveries.
- Downsides: airport queues, swapping out your home SIM (unless your phone has dual SIM), and plans sized for longer stays.
Option 2: Travel eSIM
A travel eSIM is a data plan you buy online and install before you fly. Your home SIM stays in the phone for calls and SMS codes.
- Good for: most tourists and business travellers who mainly need maps, ride-hailing, messaging and browsing.
- Downsides: usually data-only (no local number), and your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked.
Option 3: Roaming on your home plan
The simplest option: do nothing and pay your home carrier's roaming rate or daily pass.
- Good for: very short trips, or if your plan already includes the UAE.
- Downsides: often the most expensive per GB. Check your carrier's UAE rates before you go.

Our take
For most visitors, a travel eSIM is the easiest choice: set it up at home, land connected, and keep your normal number for messages. Choose a tourist SIM if you need a UAE number. Use roaming only if your home plan makes it cheap.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a tourist SIM card at Dubai airport?
Yes. UAE operators sell tourist SIM cards in the arrival halls at Dubai International Airport. You need your passport, and there can be queues after busy flights.
Is an eSIM cheaper than a Dubai tourist SIM?
It depends on the plan. For data-only use, travel eSIMs are often competitive and avoid the airport queue; a tourist SIM can be better value if you also need a local number and local calls. Compare the live eSIM prices above with the operator's current tourist offers.
Can I make WhatsApp calls in Dubai?
Some internet voice and video calling services are restricted in the UAE, regardless of which SIM or eSIM you use. Messaging works normally; check which calling apps are currently permitted before relying on them.
Does a UAE eSIM work in Abu Dhabi and the other emirates?
Yes. UAE plans cover the whole country, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and the other emirates.
